LAHDC-Kargil Poll: Congress-NC Alliance Wins Big, Bags 17 Seats As Counting Of Votes Underway

According to authorities, the National Conference (NC) has gained nine seats so far, while its ally, the Congress, has won eight.

Votes for the 26 seats on the 30-member Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Kargil, are being counted amid strict security. The National Conference and Congress had won 17 seats in the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council-Kargil poll so far, news agency PTI reported. According to authorities, the National Conference (NC) has gained nine seats so far, while its ally, the Congress, has won eight. According to them, the BJP has won two seats and an Independent candidate has won one.

Officials stated that so far, the results of 20 of the 26 seats for which elections were held on October 4 had been released. The administration appoints four voting members to the 30-person Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC)-Kargil.

After securing victory from Cha constituency in 5th Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council Election, BJP candidate Stanzin Lakpa stated: "The election process was a long process this time & therefore we had to face a tough competition. But the people of my constituency voted for me and I won. I want to thank all the people of my constituency. I had faith that the people were happy with my work in the past five years. Now, I will work even harder for my people."

Kargil had a turnout of 77.62 percent in the polls. There were 85 contestants in all, including 25 independent candidates. The National Conference (NC) and Congress formed a pre-poll coalition in the council elections. However, North Carolina nominated 17 candidates, while Congress had 22. NC has maintained a dominance in Kargil division, while Congress has remained an opposition force.

The pre-election coalition was limited to places where the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) faced stiff competition. After repealing Article 370 and reducing the former state to a union territory, the Ladakh Council elections are viewed as a litmus test for the BJP.
