Kejriwal's New Delhi To Sisodia's Jangpura: 14 Seats Where Congress Polled More Votes Than BJP's Winning Margin

Congress received more votes than the winning margin in 14 seats where BJP defeated AAP candidates, including former Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia.

The Aam Aadmi Party was swept away by the Bharatiya Janata Party in a crushing defeat after a decade-long rule in Delhi. Congress, too, hit a hat-trick of zeroes as it failed to bag even a single seat, yet again for the third time in a row.

However, the voting figures indicate that the AAP and Congress could have won 14 more seats if they contested in an alliance under the INDIA bloc. This is because the Congress received more votes than the winning margin in 14 constituencies where BJP defeated the AAP candidates. AAP on Saturday managed to win 22 seats, 14 short of the majority mark.

These 14 Assembly seats are: New Delhi, Jangpura, Timarpur, Rajender Nagar, Badli, Nangloi Jat, Madipur, Greater Kailash, Kasturba Nagar, Malviya Nagar, Chhatarpur, Mehrauli, Sangam Vihar, and Trilokpuri.

New Delhi

BJP candidate Parvesh Verma, son of former Delhi CM Sahib Singh Verma, defeated Kejriwal in New Delhi, where the AAP chief had won thrice since 2013. Verma defeated Kejriwal by 4,089 votes, whereas Congress candidate Sandeep Dikshit won 4,568 votes, finishing third.

In the 2013 Delhi elections, Kejriwal had defeated Sandeep Dikshit’s mother Sheila Dikshit, leading AAP to form a government in the national capital.

Jangpura

Similarly, former Deputy CM Manish Sisodia lost to BJP’s Tarvinder Singh Marwah by merely 675 votes. Congress candidate Farhad Suri, on the other hand, bagged 7,350 votes. AAP had fielded Sisodia, a three-time Patparganj MLA, from Jangpura this time in a gamble to fight anti-incumbency.

Greater Kailash

Delhi minister and AAP candidate Saurabh Bharadwaj was defeated by BJP leader Shikha Roy by 3,188 votes. Congress candidate, Garvit Singhvi, got 6,711 votes in Greater Kailash.

Bharadwaj has been a three-time MLA and was also a minister in Kejriwal's cabinet, holding portfolios of home, health, power, and urban development.

Malviya Nagar

Another key candidate of AAP, Somnath Bharti, lost to the BJP leader Satish Upadhyay, a former councillor, by 2,131 votes. Congress' Jitender Kumar Kochar secured 6,770 votes here. It was an unexpected loss as Bharti had been the sitting MLA from Malviya Nagar since 2013.

Rajinder Nagar

Durgesh Pathak was defeated by BJP’s Umang Bajaj by 1,231 votes in Rajinder Nagar. Here, Congress candidate Vineet Yadav secured 4,015 votes here. A member of the AAP’s Political Affairs Committee, Pathak had first won the seat in the 2022 bypoll  necessitated after AAP MLA Raghav Chadha was nominated to the Rajya Sabha.

Madipur-SC

Another prominent AAP leader who lost was Deputy Speaker Rakhi Birla. A three-time Mangol Puri MLA, Birla was fielded from the Madipur-SC seat in this year's elections. However, she lost to the BJP’s Kailash Gangwal by 10,899 votes, while Congress' J P Panwar recieved 17,958 votes.

Sangam Vihar

AAP Sangam Vihar MLA Dinesh Mohaniya was also defeated by BJP candidate Chandan Kumar Choudhary by a slim margin of just 344 votes, which was among the lowest margins. Congress’s Harsh Choudhary, on the other hand, bagged 15,863 votes.
