Himachal: BJP Favourite To Win Election, Unemployment Major Issue, Finds ABP-CVoter Survey

The Himachal Pradesh Assembly polls will be held in a single phase on November 12. Results will be announced on December 8.

A survey conducted by ABP-CVoter in poll-bound Himachal Pradesh found that a majority of voters felt the BJP would win the election despite palpable anger against the incumbent government over unemployement. As per the survey, about 51 per cent of responders were of the opinion that BJP would return to power in Himachal Pradesh. About 35.5 per cent felt Congress would upseat the Jairam Thakur government while only 5.6 per cent gave a chance to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

In the 2017 polls, the BJP won 44 seats and Congress 21. In Himachal Pradesh, which has 68 assembly seats, 35 is the majority.

Howvever, there is anger against the BJP government among the people as well. About 45.5 per cent of responders said they were angry and wanted to change the government. 

The ABP-CVoter survey found that 48.8 per cent of those surveyed cited unemployment as the major issue in the upcoming polls. 

About 15 per cent felt electricity, water and roads needed attention while 7.3 per cent of the responders listed inflation as the biggest issue. Corruption in government works and plight of farmers in Himachal were the other issues flagged by the people.

A majority of responders (nearly 32 per cent) have named Jairam Thakur as the most preffered chief ministrial candidate for the upcoming polls. Close on his heels is Union Minister Anurag Thakur, with 25.7 per cent favouring him to be the next Himachal CM. Congress's Pratibha Singh, widow of former Himachal CM Virbhadra Singh, is the third preferred choice.

In terms of the performance of the BJP government in Himachal, nearly 37 per cent have rated it "good". A similar percentage of those surveyed have termed CM Jairam Thakur's performance as "good". 

Interestingly, an overwhelming 64.3 per cent of responders have given their approval to the performance of Narendra Modi as the Prime Minister of India.
