Congress delegation to meet EC this evening over biopic of PM Narendra Modi

Last Saturday, the Karnataka Congress asked the Election Commission to pre-view the biopic to ascertain whether it violated the model code of conduct and would potentially influence free and fair elections.

New Delhi: A Congress delegation comprising Randeep Singh Surjewala, Kapil Sibal, and Abhishek Manu Singhvi is set to meet the Election Commission of India this evening over the release of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's biopic just before Lok Sabha elections. The Congress party believes releasing the biopic on April 5 is gross violation of the model code of conduct for the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls. ‘PM Narendra Modi’  features Vivek Oberoi in the title role. The biopic is directed by Omung Kumar, who has earlier made films on the lives of boxer Mary Kom and Sarabjit Singh, who was sentenced to death in Pakistan after being convicted of terrorism and espionage. Last Saturday, the Karnataka Congress asked the Election Commission to pre-view the biopic to ascertain whether it violated the model code of conduct and would potentially influence free and fair elections. The same day, Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navanirman Sena also threatened to stall the release of the biopic claiming it violated the model code of conduct. The party said the BJP was sponsoring movies like 'Toilet-Ek Prem Katha' and 'Padman' to promote its government's schemes. Directed by Omung Kumar, the biopic will encompass the journey of Modi from his childhood to his years as chief minister onto his resounding win at the 2014 general election and being nominated as prime minister. The movie also stars Boman Irani, Manoj Joshi, Prashant Narayanan, Zarina Wahab, Barkha Sengupta, Anjan Shrivastav, Yatin Karyekar, Ramakant Dayma, Akshat R Saluja, Jimesh Patel and Darshan Kumaar. Veteran actor Suresh Oberoi, Vivek's father, and Anand Pandit are co-producing the film along with Sandip Ssingh. Apart from Hindi, the film will also release in Tamil and Telugu.
