Bypolls 2023: Voting Underway In TN’s Erode East, Bengal’s Sagardighi, J'khand’s Ramgarh Seats — Top Points
Till 9am, 10.10% voter turnout was recorded in Erode East, 13.37% in Sagardighi, and 15.19% in Ramgarh Assembly bypolls as per the Election Commission of India.
New Delhi: Polling is underway for three Assembly constituencies across three states in the country along with assembly elections in Nagaland and Meghalaya. Tamil Nadu’s Erode East seat, Sagardighi in West Bengal and Ramgarh Assembly seat in Jharkhand are undergoing byelections. The polling for all the three constituencies began at 7 am amid tight security and will end at 4 pm today.

The counting of votes will take place on March 2 along with the three northeastern states of Nagaland, Meghalaya and Tripura.

The bypoll to Erode East constituency in Tamil Nadu was necessitated after the demise of sitting legislator E Thirumahan Everaa, son of Congress leader and former Union Minister E V K S Elangovan, the candidate fielded by DMK backed by Congress against AIADMK
Elangovan is pitted against AIADMK's K Thennarasu, a former legislator.
"We are ready to conduct the by-election as per schedule for Erode East Assembly Constituency on Monday," said K Sivakumar, Returning Officer for the segment.
In Bengal’s the bypoll is taking place at Sagardighi constituency in Murshidabad district after the death of its three-time TMC MLA and state minister Subrata Saha in December last year.
Candidates of the ruling Trinamool Congress, opposition BJP and the Congress-Left alliance are the main contestants.
The TMC and BJP fielded Debashish Banerjee and Dilip Saha respectively, while the Left-supported Congress candidate is Bayron Biswas.
The byelection in Jharkhand’s Ramgarh assembly constituency was necessitated after the disqualification of Congress legislator Mamta Devi, following her conviction in a criminal case.

Though 18 candidates, including 14 Independents, are in the fray, the contest will be mainly between the Congress, an ally of the ruling JMM-led coalition, and the AJSU Party, which has tied up with the BJP for the poll.
Mamta Devi’s husband, Bajrang Mahto has been fielded by Congress from the seat while the AJSU Party has nominated its leader Sunita Choudhary.
