Assembly election results 2018: This is a victory against BJP's negative politics, says Sonia Gandhi

The party saw itself in a see-saw battle with the BJP in Madhya Pradesh but achieved a major boost this morning when BSP supremo Mayawati declared support to the Congress only to keep the saffron party at bay.

New Delhi: In her first comments on the assembly election results, former Congress chief Sonia Gandhi today said that “this is a victory against BJP's negative politics.” The 72-year-old has passed the leadership baton to her son in December last year. The Congress party did not taste much success in 2018 but registered thundering victories in three of the five states whose results were announced on Tuesday. Addressing a press conference here after the Congress' resurgence in the Hindi heartland states of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, Rahul Gandhi had yesterday said, "I was speaking to my mother yesterday and I was telling her that the absolute best thing for me was the 2014 election. I've learnt a lot from that election." "The most important thing that he learnt from the 2014 polls was humility, said the 48-year-old Congress President. "This is a great country and the most important thing in this country is what the people feel," he said. “We have defeated them now and we will defeat them in 2019," he further said. The party saw itself in a see-saw battle with the BJP in Madhya Pradesh but achieved a major boost this morning when BSP supremo Mayawati declared support to the Congress only to keep the saffron party at bay. In Rajasthan, the Congress will stake claim to form the government today evening after the party president decides on the new chief minister. The Congress in Chhattisgarh will hold its legislature party meeting today to decide on the next chief minister of the state. Reports say Rahul Gandhi has recorded message to party workers asking them their opinion about who should become the next chief minister.
