As the high-octane assembly elections to five states inch closer, political parties are actively taking out rallies, announcing poll sops and unveiling the names of candidates. Elections to the five states of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Telangana and Mizoram will be held between November 7 and 30.
For Chhattisgarh, both BJP and Congress have announced the names of candidates for all the 90 seats. The Congress has set a target of winning 75 seats this time, party leaders said.
Polling for the 90-member Chhattisgarh Assembly will be held in two phases on November 7 and 17.
For Madhya Pradesh, the BJP has released five lists of candidates, with the total number of names announced so far being 228. The names of candidates for two seats for the 230-seat MP assembly elections are yet to be decided.
The Congress has declared all candidates for the MP polls. The party on Wednesday changed candidates from Sumawali, Pipariya, Jaora and Badnagar Assembly seats.
Meanwhile, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has announced two "guarantees" if his party is re-elected. The poll sops include cooking gas cylinder at Rs 500 to 1.05 crore families and an annual honorarium of Rs 10,000 to the woman head of a family. Addressing a party rally in Jhunjhunu, Gehlot said that under the "Grah Laxmi Guarantee", the woman head of a family will be given Rs 10,000 a year in instalments. He also promised that 1.05 crore families will get LPG cylinder at Rs 500 when the Congress government is formed again in the state.
Both Congress and BJP heavyweights are set to visit Mizoram ahead of the elections to the 40-member assembly on November 7. Senior Congress leaders Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Jairam Ramesh and Shashi Tharoor, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP chief JP Nadda and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari are set to visit the poll-bound state.
For Telangana, the Congress leadership deliberated upon names for the second list of candidates at a key meeting of the party's Central Election Committee. The party has so far declared a total of 55 candidates.
