Tripura: Schools Closed Till August 22, Colleges Closed Today Due To Heavy Rainfall

The Tripura government has ordered the closure of all schools for two days and all colleges for one day due to heavy rainfall.

In response to the current situation and heavy rainfall, the Tripura government has announced a two-day closure for all schools on August 21st and 22nd. Additionally, all colleges will remain closed on August 21st. Students, teachers, and staff are advised to stay safe and adhere to the government's instructions.

"Due to the current situation and heavy rainfall, the government has declared a two-day closure for all schools on August 21st and 22nd. Additionally, all colleges will remain closed on August 21st. All students, teachers, and staff are requested to stay safe and follow the instructions," CM Manik Saha said in a post on X.

At least seven people, including three members of a single family, lost their lives, and two villagers remain missing after landslides triggered by relentless rains struck multiple locations in Tripura, PTI quoted officials as saying.

Five fatalities were reported in South Tripura district, while one death each occurred in Gomati and Khowai districts, as confirmed by Revenue Department Secretary Brijesh Pandey. The missing persons are from Khowai and Gomati districts.

Heavy rainfall since Sunday has caused widespread waterlogging across the state. Due to the adverse weather conditions, a red alert has been issued in South Tripura district following warnings from the Meteorology department for continued moderate to heavy rainfall. An orange alert has been declared for the remaining seven districts in the northeastern state.

"In the past 48 hours, the state has experienced unprecedented rainfall, leading to landslides in several areas and leaving thousands of people homeless. Currently, 5,607 affected families are taking shelter in 183 relief camps, where they are receiving necessary aid," Pandey said during a press conference.

In South Tripura’s Debipur area, three members of a family tragically died when their house collapsed due to a massive landslide on Monday night, reported Santirbazar Sub-Divisional Magistrate Abhedananda Baidya.

In Gomati district, a 52-year-old man lost his life, and another individual went missing in the Karbook area following a landslide on August 19, according to Additional District Magistrate Binoy Bhusan Das.

In Khowai district, a 14-year-old boy died when a landslide caused mounds of earth to collapse onto his house in Champlai area on Monday, a police officer confirmed.

Details of the two other fatalities and one missing person have yet to be released.

Chief Minister Manik Saha, currently in Delhi, has directed local administrations to take necessary actions in response to the natural disaster. He is expected to return to Tripura on Tuesday night.

Several low-lying areas of the Santirbazar subdivision in South Tripura have been inundated due to heavy rainfall, according to Baidya. The Muhuri and Lawgang rivers have exceeded danger levels, and four relief camps have been established to aid flood-affected residents in the subdivision.

"Due to the heavy rains, several regions in South Tripura and other districts are experiencing flooding. Relief centers have been set up to assist those affected," the Chief Minister stated in a Facebook post.
