This University In Karnataka Will Be Renamed After Former PM Manmohan Singh

In Budget 2025, Siddaramaiah announced that Karnataka government will introduce Chevening Karnataka Master’s Scholarship Programme, enabling female students to pursue studies in England universities.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, while presenting the state budget for 2025-26, announced that Bengaluru City University will be renamed as Dr Manmohan Singh Bengaluru City University. The decision is aimed at honouring the former Prime Minister’s contributions to economy, education and the country.

As part of this initiative, Government Arts College and Government RC College will become constituent colleges under the newly renamed university to enhance its academic offerings, as per a report on PTI. Additionally, the government has proposed the establishment of a constituent college of Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) in Chintamani Taluk, Chikkaballapur district, at a cost of Rs 150 crore.

Karnataka Budget 2025: Education Allocation

The budget also includes a Rs 2,500 crore investment over the next four years, supported by the World Bank, to improve infrastructure in first-grade colleges and establish a Centre of Excellence. To promote women’s education, twenty-six women’s colleges will be upgraded at a cost of Rs 26 crore.

Addressing faculty shortages, the government has committed to filling 2,000 vacant teaching positions across government colleges, engineering institutions, and polytechnics, as per the report.

In a significant push towards global exposure and industry-oriented education, Karnataka government will introduce the Chevening Karnataka Master’s Scholarship Programme, enabling female students to pursue studies in prestigious universities in England. The government also plans to collaborate with industry partners to offer internships and corporate training, equipping students with practical skills. Additionally, professional subject experts will be appointed as Professors of Practice in 16 government engineering colleges to enhance employability.
