JEE Advanced 2025 Eligibility Criteria Announced, Number Of Attempts Increased To 3
IIT Kanpur has released JEE 2025 eligibility criteria on jeeadv.ac.in, increasing JEE Advanced attempts to three.
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur has published the eligibility criteria for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) 2025 on its official website, jeeadv.ac.in, covering both Indian and foreign nationals. Candidates planning to appear for JEE 2025 should review these criteria thoroughly on the website to understand the requirements. The guidelines outline expected performance in JEE Mains, age restrictions, maximum attempts, Class 12th exam appearance, and prior admission status at IITs, among other qualifications. Importantly, candidates should note that the allowed number of attempts for the JEE Advanced exam has increased from two to three.
Performance In JEE (Main) 2025
Candidates must rank among the top 2,50,000 successful candidates (across all categories) in the BE/BTech paper (Paper 1) of JEE Main 2025. This total includes 10% General-EWS, 27% OBC-NCL, 15% SC, 7.5% ST, and 40.5% Open category candidates. Each category will also have a 5% horizontal reservation for PwD candidates.
The category-wise seat distribution (with PwD reservation) is as follows:
- Open: 1,01,250
- General-EWS: 25,000
- OBC-NCL: 67,500
- SC: 37,500
- ST: 18,750
The total number of candidates might slightly exceed 2,50,000 due to tied ranks or scores, IIT Kanpur noted.
Age Limit
Candidates should be born on or after October 1, 2000. For SC, ST, and PwD candidates, a five-year age relaxation applies, allowing candidates born on or after October 1, 1995, to take the test.
Number of Attempts
Each candidate may attempt JEE Advanced a maximum of three times over three consecutive years.

Class 12 (or equivalent) Exam Requirement
Candidates must have appeared for the Class 12 (or equivalent) exam for the first time in 2023, 2024, or 2025, with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as required subjects. Candidates who first attempted the Class 12 exam in 2022 or earlier are not eligible for JEE Advanced 2025.
Prior Admission At IITs
Candidates should not have been previously admitted to any IIT under the academic programs listed in the JoSAA business rules of 2024 or earlier. Those whose IIT admissions were cancelled after joining are also ineligible. However, candidates admitted to an IIT preparatory course for the first time in 2024 can appear in JEE Advanced 2025.
Candidates who were allocated an IIT seat through JoSAA but either did not report online, withdrew before the final round, or had their seat cancelled before the final round of seat allocation are eligible for JEE Advanced 2025.
