Jadavpur University Student Death Row: Six More Arrested, Chancellor Dr CV Ananda Bose To Chair Emergency Meeting At Raj Bhavan Today

West Bengal Governor and Jadavpur University Chancellor CV Ananda Bose will chair an emergency meeting at the Raj Bhavan at 05:00 PM today.

The West Bengal Police have arrested six more Jadavpur University students in relation to the death of a first year student at the university due to alleged ragging. The police said that all these six people were absconding. Among the six arrested, there are former students of Jadavpur University. The police have arrested a total of 9 people in the case so far. Dean of Students and Registrar of JU were also asked to meet Joint CP Crime of Kolkata Police at Lalbazar today at 3:00 PM today. 

Meanwhile, Chancellor Dr CV Ananda Bose has instructed the University authorities to convene an emergency meeting of Jadavpur University Court to be chaired by Chancellor today at 5 pm at Raj Bhavan. Notably, the death of Swapnadip Kundu, a first year Bengali Honours student at Jadavpur University has created an uproar among political corridors of the state. A native of Nadia district’s Nagula, Kundu died days after enrolling at the university. He died by falling from the second-floor balcony of the university’s main hostel building. The student allegedly faced ragging at the university. 

Following the incident, West Bengal Governor Dr CV Ananda Bose who also serves as the Chancellor of Jadavpur University visited the hostel to console his father and assured him of appropriate actions against those responsible for the death. Students from the university have alleged ragging to be associated with Kundu’s death. Earlier, the police also hinted at Kundu's mental distress which possibly stemmed from some seniors calling him names.

Meanwhile, the Jadavpur University anti-ragging committee has also submitted its report on the matter to the UGC, on its preliminary findings into the death of Swapnadip Kundu, as reported by PTI. "The boy's death was extremely tragic. Police investigation is underway and we want the guilty to be punished." "We have zero tolerance towards ragging and will ensure that the university is rid of the menace. We are discussing matters of security and surveillance by taking into confidence all stakeholders," Registrar, Dean of Student Affairs and member of the internal inquiry committee Snehamanju Basu was quoted as saying by PTI on the student’s death.
