Govt To Set Up Medical Colleges In All Districts, Focus On Filling Vacant Posts Of Doctors: Odisha CM

Odisha CM Mohan Charan Majhi pledged to establish a medical college in each district and fill vacant doctor positions.

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced on Wednesday that his government is committed to establishing a medical college in each of the 30 districts and prioritising the filling of vacant doctor positions.

Speaking at the annual conference of the Odisha Medical Service Association (OMSA) in Balasore, Majhi urged doctors to work with dedication and maintain the public's trust in the medical profession, as reported by news agency PTI.

He criticized the previous BJD government for neglecting the health sector, noting that of the 15,774 sanctioned doctor positions, 5,765 have been vacant for an extended period. He highlighted that only 443 doctors were appointed on an ad hoc and contractual basis during that time.

"Our government's priority is to fill all vacant posts promptly and enhance medical services in the state. Nurses also play a crucial role in patient care," he stated.

Majhi revealed that the health department's budget has been increased by 32 percent for the 2024-25 fiscal year. "We are committed to providing quality healthcare for everyone. We are prepared to implement the Ayushman Bharat scheme, which was denied to the people of Odisha due to political reasons," he added.

He accused the former BJD government of not implementing the Ayushman Bharat scheme out of fear that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would receive credit for it.

Addressing OMSA's demands, Majhi assured that doctors' incentives and housing issues would be resolved soon. He also promised to create a safe working environment for healthcare professionals.
