Why Do Students Chase Government Jobs? Vijender Chauhan, Neetu Singh Explain At ABP SmartEd Conclave

In India, the aura of government jobs hold high status and financial stability, fueled by social media portrayals. Educators Vijender Chauhan and Neetu Singh explore why such jobs are so sought after.

In India, government jobs are not seen just as a source of earning; they are seen as a status symbol and a solution to all problems in life. However, the hype around government jobs is largely fuelled by social media content creators, educators Vijender Singh Chauhan and Neetu Singh said.

Speaking at ABP SmartEd Conclave on Wednesday, January 22, Chauhan said: "It is true to some extent that if you are in a tier-2 or tier-3 city, your life is sorted with a government job. But the fact is that the glamorisation of government jobs, especially UPSC jobs like IAS and IPS, is a product of social media reels. The videos often show some IAS officer getting down from his car and some upbeat music is playing in the background, creating an aura. That is the problem."

Chauhan's co-speaker on the panel discussion titled 'Power Of Edutainment', founder of KD Campus Neetu Singh said that government jobs often create an aura of status and ensure a steady income with perks. "There was a time when love was blind. Today, love has both eyes and it sees both status and money. If you work a private job or have a business you need to perform every day... But if you are in a government job, you get a steady earning. The importance of this was realised especially after Covid-19."

She said that for a lower-middle-class family, a government job is often the only path to climb up to the elite class. "They don't have the money to start a business or startup. In the private sector, they don't have job security. A government job provides them the only means for a settled life," she said.

She said that the reality of the Indian middle-class society cannot be ignored where a man has to shoulder the responsibility of his parents and sisters.
