8 Foreign Universities Want To Set Up An International Campus In India

8 foreign universities said they are willing to set up their international campuses in India. Of these, 5 are American universities and 1 each in the UK, Australia, and Canada.

New Delhi: 8 foreign universities in the top 50 and 100 of the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2021 said they are interested in setting up their international campuses in India. Of these international universities, 5 are American universities and 1 each in the UK, Australia, and Canada.

43 international level universities had participated in a survey. Of the 43 universities, 16 said they were not considering setting up any campus in India, and another 16 said they had not decided about it. At the same time, 8 universities that showed interest claimed that they want to start their venture for Indian students. The survey was conducted by the National Institute of Educational Planning and Administration (NIEPA) with the topic, "Establishment of International Branch Campus in India" between 21 December 2020, and 12 February 2021 to get the responses of the Top 200 Universities of the World University Rankings 2021.

According to the report, all 8 respondents indicated that they 'definitely consider' India as a potential destination for setting up an International Branch Campus.  He said a liberal regulatory framework is needed to improve India's attractiveness. This is of particular importance as the National Policy on Education (NEP) 2020 had recommended allowing only 'Top 100 category' universities in the World University Rankings to operate in India.

According to Aldo Mathews, Deputy Advisor, Unit for International Co-Operation NIEPA, "Contrary to popular view, foreign universities in the top category are also interested in setting up their campuses in India. But most of them are adopting a wait and watch approach as the rules and regulations of the government are yet to be framed.”
