Delhi Weather Update: Light Rain And Thunderstorms Expected In Delhi Today, Says IMD

The weatherman has predicted gusty winds to accompany light rainfall and thunderstorms during in Delhi. Rain also forecast for Maharashtra's Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar.

The minimum temperature on Sunday in the national capital settled at 22.8 degrees Celsius which is a just notch below the season's average temperature. The relative humidity recorded at 8:30 am stood at 66 per cent as per the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The weatherman has forecast cloudy skies for the day with light rain and thunderstorms which will be accompanied by gusty winds with a speed of about 30-40 kilometres per hour.

The maximum temperature for Delhi is likely to hover around 31 degrees Celsius.

On Saturday, the minimum temperature settled at 22.2 degrees Celsius while the maximum temperature for the day was recorded at 33. 1 degrees Celsius, reported news agency PTI.

IMD Issues Warning In Maharashtra

IMD at 10 am issued a warning regarding Maharashtra receiving light to moderate spells of rain during the next 3-4 hours. The weatherman said that these spells of rain are likely to occur at isolated places in the districts of Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar.

Warning For Kerala And Tamil Nadu

IMD issued a warning for 24-hourly accumulated rainfall till 08:30  on Twitter and posted, "Under the influence of a trough extending from a cyclonic circulation over Maldives area; very intense convection lies over Kerala & Ghat areas of Tamil Nadu. 24-hourly Accumulated rainfall till 0830 hrs IST of tomorrow is very likely to be isolated heavy over these areas."

IMD Issues Heat Index

The IMD on Friday started issuing heat index on an experimental basis for different parts of the country It takes into account the air temperature and relative humidity. In addition to giving the day's minimum and maximum temperatures, the heat index, mainly for the plains, will give people "a sense of what the temperature actually feels like".

IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra at a Media Workshop on Weather and Climate said, "We are utilising the temperature and humidity data at 2:30 pm for the heat index and the forecasts as the maximum temperature occurs at that time."

Currently, the IMD uses a formula of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to calculate the heat index.
