Delhi: Visibility Drops To Zero Amid Dense Fog, 'Severe' AQI. 22 Trains Delayed, 9 Flights Diverted

Delhi-NCR Winter: The dense fog in Delhi has made the visibility drop to zero for the first time in this winter season. Around 22 trains running from across India have been delayed due to the weather conditions.

A dense layer of fog engulfed the skyline of the national capital making the visibility drop to zero for the first time this winter on Sunday. According to news agency ANI, 22 trains running from across India to Delhi were reported late due to the fog. The minimum temperature recorded in the RK Puram area was 7 degrees Celsius. The air quality amid this chilly morning was recorded in the 'Severe' category with the Air Quality Index (AQI) standing at 478 in the Anand Vihar area, 465 at the Jawahar Lal Nehru Stadium area at 465, 465 at IGI Airport (T3) area, and 455 in ITO Delhi at 455.

High levels of air pollution combined with cold conditions reduced the visibility further. Here is the list of trains that have been affected and are running late amid the dense fog. 

Several flight operations were also delayed at Delhi Airport due to the weather conditions. According to news agency PTI, as many as nine flights were diverted at the Delhi airport on Sunday morning due to bad weather, an official said. These flights, including an international flight, were diverted to Jaipur between 4.30 am to 10.30 am. The international flight that was initially diverted to Mumbai due to bad weather was later re-routed to Jaipur, the official told PTI.

The skyline near the India Gate was engulfed in fog on Sunday.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed that for the first time this winter season, zero meter visibility has been recorded in parts of India such as  Ganganagar, Patiala, Ambala, Chandigarh, Palam, Safdarjung, Bareilly, Lucknow, Bahraich, Varanasi, Prayagraj and Tezpur (Assam).
 
 
 
ANI also quoted the IMD as informing, "Very dense fog layer extends over Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, North Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh. Passengers on highways need to drive extremely carefully and only with fog lights. Journeys need to be halted until fog reduction by morning especially on expressways. Very Dense fog reported over Amritsar, Chandigarh, Patiala, Ambala, Ganganagar, Palam, Safdarjung, and Lucknow with visibility 0 meters since 2:30 am IST today."

Delhi Police posted from its official X handle, "The Meteorological Department, Delhi, has forecast dense to very dense fog on January 14, 2024, and dense fog on January 15 & 16, 2024. We appeal to all to drive carefully in the fog."
