Delhi, Noida Wake Up To Fresh Spell Of Rain As Yamuna Overflows, More Showers Predicted

Parts of Delhi-NCR received fresh showers on Tuesday amid rising concerns over the rise in the water level of Yamuna river in the national capital.

Residents in Delhi and Noida woke up to a fresh spell of rain on Tuesday morning amid concerns over the rise in the Yamuna water level. Delhi witnessed one of its worst flood situations in decades after Yamuna crossed the danger mark weeks ago inundating several parts of the town. Authorities established relief camps for the displaced people who are still unsure of any positive development in the national capital's flood condition as Yamuna again breached the danger mark of 205.33 metres. Meanwhile, following a surge in discharge from the Hathnikund Barrage into the river after heavy rain showered parts of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, the Old Yamuna Bridge has been closed.

The raising water level poses a threat to the ongoing relief and rehabilitation efforts of the Delhi government, an official was quoted as saying by PTI. IMD has predicted thundershowers across Delhi-NCR for the coming five days.

According to PTI, nearly 190 dengue cases have been reported in the national capital this year till July 22, the highest for the period since 2018, according to a civic body report released on Monday. The report by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) also mentioned that 61 cases of malaria have been recorded in the same period.

The report further said that as many as 187 cases of dengue have been reported in Delhi this year till July 22 and the number of dengue cases reported in July so far stood at 65. According to PTI, the number stood at 40 in June and 23 in May, as per the report.

Last year, Delhi reported 159 dengue cases between January 1 and July 15. During the same period in 2021, the national capital witnessed 47 dengue cases, 26 in 2020, 34 in 2019 and 49 in 2018.

Meanwhile, Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi recently said that there is a possibility of a rise in dengue and malaria cases in the city this year due to flooding in several areas.
