Delhi Airport Roof Collapse Kills One, Terminal Ops Suspended

All injured people are safe and teams of Delhi Police, NDRF, and CISF are present and legal action is being taken.

Delhi Airport Roof Collapse: In the latest developments pertaining to the Delhi Airport roof collapse, at least one person has died and six people have sustained injuries, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), IGI Airport Usha Rangnani said. She also said that all injured people are safe and teams of Delhi Police, NDRF, and CISF are present and legal action is being taken.

"At around 5 am, the shed outside Terminal 1 of IGIA (domestic airport), spanning from Departure Gate No. 1 to Gate No. 2, collapsed, in which around 4 vehicles were damaged and around 6 persons were injured and one person died. All injured persons are stable. Delhi Police, fire service, CISF & NDRF teams are present on the spot. Legal action is being taken," Rangnani said, as quoted by news agency ANI. 

Following the incident, operations on Terminal 1 have been suspended and rest of the terminals are operating normally. The DGCA has advised all the airlines to accommodate passengers on alternate flights or provide full refunds under the regulations.

Dwarka Metro Station In Delhi Closed

Due to heavy rains, entry and exit is closed at Yashobhoomi Dwarka Sector - 25 Metro station. The DMRC said that Shuttle service from Delhi Aerocity Metro station to Terminal 1-IGI Airport has been suspended. The service is running normal on all other lines.

Union Minister Announces Compensation  

Union Minister of Civil Aviation Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu said that compensation of Rs 20 lakh for the deceased and Rs 3 lakh for the injured has been announced.
 
"A section of the canopy which is outside of the airport has collapsed due to heavy rains. We express our condolence to the life that has been lost in this tragic incident, four people have also been injured. So we are taking care of them right now. We immediately sent the emergency response team, the fire safety team and also the CISF, NDRF teams. Everyone was available at the site and they have done thorough inspection so that no other casualties are there. So right now the situation is under control. The rest of the terminal building has been closed and everything is being thoroughly inspected so that there is no further untoward incident here," the Union Minister said.

Heavy Rain In Delhi

Several parts of the national capital received heavy rain on Friday morning, causing waterlogging and leaving several roads inundated.  This comes a day after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted a generally cloudy sky along with heavy rain in the next few days, keeping the mercury in check.

India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Thursday that the monsoon is expected to arrive in the national capital in the next two to three days, bringing relief from the summer heat.

The IMD said in a statement that conditions are likely to become favourable for the advance of the southwest monsoon in Delhi during the next two to three days.
