Delhi Floods: Indraprastha Embankment Sealed After 20-Hour Repair Operation, But ITO Area Remains Flooded

After a 20-hour operation, the Indraprastha embankment on the Yamuna River in Delhi was closed and one of the jammed gates of the ITO barrage was opened.

The Indraprastha embankment on the Yamuna River in Delhi was sealed after a 20-hour repair operation by workers, and Army personnel. One of the jammed gates of the ITO barrage was also opened on Saturday during the operation. The remaining four gates are expected to be opened soon. The national capital remains submerged as the Yamuna continues to flow above the danger mark. The water level of Yamuna at 7 am today was recorded at 207.62 metres.

Delhi LG VK Saxena and CM Arvind Kejriwal thanked all those involved in the repair operation.

Delhi CM Kejriwal said that a divers' team extracted the silt from under the water with a compressor and opened the jammed gate with a hydra crane. He tweeted, "After nearly 20 hours of non-stop toil, the first jammed gate of the ITO Barrage has been opened. A diving team extracted the silt from under the water with a compressor, then the gate was pulled up with a hydra crane. Soon all the five gates will be opened. Special thanks to the Army Engineer Regiment and the divers."

Kejriwal earlier talked about the five barrages that were closed and said that waterlogging is taking place in the nearby areas as these gates are shut. He added that the water will flow back as soon as these gates are opened.

Delhi continued to experience flood-like conditions in various low-lying neighbourhoods along the Yamuna as a result of heavy rains and spate in the river during the previous several days. However, the water level of the Yamuna River has begun to fall.
