Delhi's Power Consumption Peaks At 5,611 MW, Breaks Winter Record

The power demand in Delhi reached at 5,611 Megawatts on Wednesday, highest during winter months.

As Delhi continues to brave the chilling temperatures, the national capital's power demand has shot through the roof. On Wednesday morning, the national capital recorded pushed peak winter power demand to an all-time high of 5,611 Megawatts, said the officials, reported news agency PTI.

According to real-time data of State Load Dispatch Centre (SLDC) Delhi, the peak power demand was 5,611 MW at 11.08 am on Wednesday, they said.

The previous all-time high peak demand during winter months was 5,559 MW last Friday, they added.

The surge in power demand has been caused mainly due to increased use of electricity by consumers for heating purposes, discom officials said, as per the PTI

Last year, the city had logged a 'record' demand of 5559 MW of power during the winter months, as recorded on January 5, 2023.

Residents in the national capital and the adjoining regions have been braving the chilling cold weather with dipping temperatures. On Friday, Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 7.1 degrees Celsius. On Monday, the city recorded its coldest day of the month so far as the minimum temperature dropped to 5.3 degrees Celsius.

Thick layer of fog has also been blanketing the region affecting rail and air operations in the national capital.

The numbing weather has, however, added to the woes for homeless and the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board has set up 190 tents across the city to house the homeless at night, a DUSIB official said on Tuesday, according to another PTI report.

These tents can accommodate approximately 8,000 people. Around 60 tents have been kept as standby and will be used as per requirement, Member Expert, DUSIB, Bipin Rai told the news agency.
