Why Hasn't PM Met Them Yet, Priyanka Gandhi Asks After Meeting Protesting Wrestlers In Delhi

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Saturday met the wrestlers protesting against WFI chief and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh at Jantar Mantar, Delhi.

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who met the wrestlers protesting against WFI chief and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh at Jantar Mantar, on Saturday questioned the government and said that if Prime Minister Narendra Modi is worried about these wrestlers, then why has he not talked to them or met them yet. "I don't have any expectations from the PM, because if he is worried about these wrestlers, then why has he not talked to them or met them yet. Why the govt is trying to save him (Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh...," Priyanka Gandhi said in Delhi.

Delhi. AAP ministers Saurabh Bharadwaj and Atishi, Congress leader Deepender Singh Hooda met the wrestlers on Friday. Delhi Police on Friday filed two FIRs against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh on charges of sexual harassment levelled against him by seven women wrestlers, news agency PTI reported. Brijbhushan Sharan Singh told the news agency PTI on Friday that he would cooperate with the Delhi Police's investigation.

The first FIR against the WFI chief pertains to allegations of a minor wrestler and was registered under POCSO Act, while the second was related to outraging modesty.

The FIRs were registered hours after Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for Delhi Police, told a Supreme Court bench, comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justice P S Narasimha, that a case will be registered later on Friday. "We have decided to register an FIR. It will be registered today," Mehta told the SC bench.

Senior advocate Kapil Sibal appearing for the wrestlers, placed an affidavit in a sealed cover voicing apprehension about the safety of a minor girl, an alleged victim of sexual assault. "Bearing in mind the content which has been placed on record, we direct the Commissioner of Police, Delhi, to make an assessment of the threat perception and provide adequate security to the minor girl involved," the bench said in its order.

Sibal further said that there are seven complainants, including the minor girl, and all of them should be given protection. Meanwhile, Olympic medallist Bajrang Punia, protesting against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh said the wrestlers’ protest will continue till Singh is sent to jail, news agency ANI reported.

The protesting wrestlers further said that they don't trust the Delhi Police, as it might file a loose FIR, PTI reported. "It (Police) might file a loose FIR. We we will see, observe then take a decision (on calling off protest). He should be behind the bars and removed from all the posts he holds, otherwise he will try to influence the investigation," Vinesh Phogat said.
