RG Kar Doctor Death: Were There More Than 1 Culprit? What Accused 'Confessed' To Kolkata Police

RG Kar doctor death case: The suspect, Sanjay Roy, has reportedly 'confessed' to his crime and admitted to being violent towards the women in his family as well.

RG Kar Doctor Death: Amid the uproar over the case of a junior doctor's rape-and-murder at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College & Hospital, the police have secured the suspect's purported "confession". In the "confession", the suspect, civic volunteer Sanjay Roy, has reportedly said that he was the lone culprit in the case, according to a report by Anandabazar Patrika Online.

He was stationed outside RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. His connection to the crime was established after he was caught on the CCTV camera entering the building.

The report cited police sources as saying that he returned home after committing the crime on August 9. When the corpse was discovered the next morning, it created a massive uproar as the media highlighted the death. His neighbours were aware that he would often go to RG Kar MCH. So, they went to him and asked about the details. However, he feigned ignorance in the case. A neighbour said that he was extremely composed for a person who had committed such a crime not even 24 hours ago.

However, his demeanour seems to have changed after his arrest.

News website India Today reported that during his custodial interrogation, Sanjay Roy confessed to the crime and even sought capital punishment for himself. The report mentioned that Sanjay Roy even admitted that he was violent towards the women in his family, including his mother, sister, and wife. Sanjay's mother-in-law had earlier complained against him, alleging physical violence against his wife.

However, it is pertinent to mention that none of the reports said that the confession was recorded in the presence of a magistrate.

CM Mamata Banerjee Orders Fast-Tracked Inquiry

Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has ordered the inquiry in the RG Kar doctor death case to be completed within seven days. The Chief Minister has set Sunday as the deadline for the police to complete their investigation. The protesting students and doctors in Kolkata have, however, demanded the probe to be completed in 48 hours.

After a general body meeting at the RG Kar Medical College & Hospital, the protestors said that they were not satisfied with the SIT probe of the police and demanded a judicial inquiry.

The victim's family, too, approached Calcutta High Court for an investigation under the supervision of the court. The family fears that the current police investigation is not progressing in the right direction. They have raised allegations of inconsistencies in information from the beginning of the incident. The court has granted permission to file an application in the matter.

'Why Are You Protecting RG Kar Principal?' Calcutta HC summons Case Diary

Several PILs have been filed before the Chief Justice's division bench of the Calcutta High Court regarding RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape-murder case. Chief Justice T S Sivagnanam questioned the move to appoint Sandeep Ghosh, who resigned as RG Kar MCH principal, principal of the Calcutta National Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata.

According to news agency ANI, the court asked him to submit a leave application by 3 PM on Tuesday, failing which the HC will pass an order for him to vacate the post. The court said he could be holding an administrative post, but he should have been the first one to be questioned.

The court asked the state counsel: "Why are you protecting him? Record his statement. Let him say whatever he knows."

The Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court also summoned the case diary in the RG Kar case besides Sandeep Ghosh's resignation letter and new appointment letter. The court said that the emotions of the protesting doctors must be taken seriously as one of their colleagues was brutally killed.
