RG Kar Doctor Death: The alleged rape-and-murder of a doctor at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Bengal's Kolkata has sent shockwaves throughout the city. After a massive uproar, the police have managed to make an arrest in the case.

After the murder, junior doctors and nursing staff of RG Kar have launched a 'cease-work' protest. They also staged a demonstration on hospital premises on Saturday.

RG Kar Doctor Murder Case

The woman junior doctor was on duty on Thursday night. After her shift ended at two o'clock in the morning, she had dinner with other junior doctors. She then went to rest in the seminar hall of the 'Chest Department' on the fourth floor of the emergency department.

Her corpse was found in the same seminar hall on Friday morning. The preliminary report of the autopsy indicated that the woman doctor had been sexually assaulted. Her body was found lying on a blood-stained mattress. The post-mortem examination report also mentioned that the deceased had bled from both eyes and the mouth.

Her private parts also had stains of blood and her face bore nail marks. Injuries were found on her neck, abdomen, and lips. There were bruises on her left ankle and the ring finger of her right hand. A case of rape and murder was registered yesterday at Tala police station based on a complaint by the victim's father. Lalbazar has constituted a special investigation team to investigate the murder.

Who Is The Suspect Arrested In The RG Kar Doctor Murder Case?

The arrested suspect has been identified as Sanjay Roy. According to police sources, Sanjay Roy is not from the hospital but had gained free access to the facility. A broken wire of a Bluetooth earphone belonging to Sanjay Roy was found by the corpse of the doctor in the fourth-floor seminar room of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. This was the primary clue that led to his arrest.

Police sources said Sanjay Roy might not have been the only one involved in the incident.

High-ranking officers from Lalbazar, including DC North Abhishek Gupta, have been to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital to investigate the murder. Besides the homicide branch, of the Kolkata Police members of the Women's Grievance Cell were also present at the scene.

No CCTV footage from the seminar hall was available, making the investigation tricky. However, the police started gathering information from the nearby areas to pinpoint the location of people around the time of the murder. Many people have been interrogated.

The police initially detained Sanjay based on the interrogation of various sources. On Saturday morning, he was placed under arrest on the basis of inconsistency in his statements and the earphone cable.

BJP Slams Mamata Government Over RG Kar Doctor's Murder

The Bengal BJP has trained its guns on the Mamata Banerjee government in Bengal over the incident. BJP leader Shehzad Poonawalla alleged that the second-year PGT teacher was on duty for 36 hours before the incident. "The condition of RG Kar Medical College And Hospital under Mamata Banerjee who is the Health Minister & Home Minister is deplorable," he said.

He also said that the state government has formed an 11-member inquiry committee to probe the murder. "However, some of the Committee members are interns and people linked to the TMC. This is a clear attempt to hide the truth," he alleged.

BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya alleged that the principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Sandip Ghosh, had asked her to go to the seminar hall at night. Malviya claimed Ghosh was transferred to Murshidabad in October 2023, for his involvement in a scam. "But he was brought back within 3 months, given his proximity to the TMC," he said.

Amit Malviya further alleged that there was an attempt to tarnish the victim and destroy her reputation so that her parents were forced to withdraw their complaint.
