Who Is Sanjay Roy? Kolkata Civic Volunteer Accused Of RG Kar Doctor’s Rape And Murder

Kolkata Doctor Death Case: Accused Sanjay Roy was taken into custody on August 10 after police found a broken wire from a Bluetooth earphone near the victim’s body which led them to him.

Sanjay Roy, the man accused of raping and murdering a female trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, was arrested by the police last week. Roy, who is not an employee of the hospital, was frequently seen in the campus buildings. He was taken into custody on Saturday, August 10, and is currently under 14 days of judicial custody.

Police sources informed that Sanjay Roy was not from the hospital but had gained free access to the facility. According to a report by NDTV, Sanjay Roy worked as a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police. Civic volunteers are recruited on a contractual basis to assist the police with various tasks, such as traffic management and disaster response, for which they receive a monthly salary of Rs 12,000. However, they do not enjoy the same benefits as regular police personnel.

Roy joined the Kolkata Police's Disaster Management Group as a volunteer in 2019. Later, he was transferred to the Police Welfare Cell before being assigned to the police outpost at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, NDTV reported. This role granted him access to all departments within the hospital.

The accused allegedly exploited his association with the police, often masquerading as an officer. He was reportedly involved in a racket within the hospital, extorting money from patients' relatives by promising to secure them a bed, according to News 18's report. In cases where a bed was not available in the government hospital, he would charge additional fees to find one in a nearby nursing home. Despite not being a police officer, Roy would sometimes use his connections to stay in the police barracks and was often seen wearing a Kolkata Police T-shirt, with a KP tag on his bike. His false authority led many volunteers to believe he was indeed a police officer, the report mentioned.

News 18 cited local media reports as revealing that Sanjay Roy confessed to the crime during police interrogation without showing any remorse. He reportedly told the police, "If you want, you can hang me." It has also been claimed that pornographic content was found on his mobile phone.

According to a report by India Today, Sanjay Roy, who had been married four times, faced marital troubles due to his abusive behaviour. Neighbours revealed that three of his wives left him because of his "misconduct," while his fourth wife passed away from cancer last year. They also alleged that Roy frequently returned home late at night in an inebriated state.

Kolkata Doctor Death Case: How Did Kolkata Police Nab Sanjay Roy?

Sanjay Roy's arrest came after a crucial piece of evidence—a broken wire from a Bluetooth earphone—was discovered near the victim’s body in a fourth-floor seminar room. According to police sources, this clue played a pivotal role in leading to Roy’s capture.

Following the alleged crime, Roy returned to his residence, slept, and then attempted to destroy evidence by washing his clothes the next morning. However, the police discovered bloodstains on his shoes during a search.

According to PTI, City Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal stated, "After committing the crime, the accused went back to the place where he was staying and slept till late on Friday morning, August 9. After waking up, he washed the clothes he was wearing during the crime to destroy evidence. His shoes, with blood stains on them, were found during a search."

Another police officer mentioned that circumstantial evidence suggests the possibility that the doctor may have been murdered before being raped, PTI reported. The police are currently interviewing staff who were on duty from Thursday night into Friday morning and are reviewing CCTV footage to gather more information.

The crime occurred inside the hospital's seminar hall, where the body of the post-graduate trainee was found on Friday morning. The initial autopsy report indicated severe injuries, with the victim bleeding from her eyes, mouth, and private parts. Injuries were also found on her left leg, neck, right hand, ring finger, and lips.

Roy will remain under police custody until August 23.
