Will Samajwadi Party Fight 2027 Uttar Pradesh Election Under INDIA Bloc? Akhilesh Yadav Responds
SP chief Akhilesh Yadav accuses BJP of land grabbing and vows to contest 2027 UP polls together with the INDIA alliance. He also criticises BJP's handling of the Maha Kumbh.

Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav on Sunday asserted that the opposition INDIA alliance will remain intact and continue its efforts in the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. Speaking at a press conference, Yadav launched a scathing attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), accusing it of attempting to seize land through the Waqf (Amendment) Bill and likening the ruling party to a “land mafia”.
“The BJP has brought the Waqf Amendment Bill so that it can snatch away land. Wherever they see land, they occupy it,” Yadav said, referring to the BJP as the “land mafia party”, news agency PTI reported.
The SP president reiterated that the PDA — an alliance representing the backward classes, Dalits, and minorities — would play a decisive role in uprooting the BJP from power in Uttar Pradesh in the next state elections. “INDIA alliance is (present) and will remain,” Yadav added, dispelling speculation about the continuity of the opposition bloc formed ahead of the 2024 general elections.
Akhilesh Yadav Alleges Mahakumbh Mismanagement, Vows Probe
Criticising the BJP over its handling of the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj, Yadav promised a probe into the alleged mismanagement if his party returns to power. He claimed the government had provided inaccurate figures regarding casualties and financial revenues during the religious gathering, particularly pointing to the failure of surveillance systems during a stampede earlier this year.
“When drones and CCTVs were needed the most (at the time of the stampede), they were either closed or were shut down,” he alleged, as per PTI. He further accused the state government of pressuring the families of victims to alter the recorded cause of death.
Addressing the controversy surrounding SP MP Ramji Lal Suman’s statement on historical figure Rana Sanga, Yadav remarked, “The history which shows each other as superior and inferior, the history which stops our progress, that history should be allowed to remain.”
Yadav also shared with the media a booklet containing his suggestions for the upcoming Prayagraj Maha Kumbh 2025, which he had previously posted on social media, along with a Harvard University study on the 2013 Kumbh Mela.
The SP chief was in Prayagraj to attend the wedding of SP state president Shyam Lal Pal’s daughter.
