Bengal: BJP’s Sukanta Arrested Over Bid To Visit Violence-Hit Beldanga, Says ‘Mamata Regime Tearing Apart…’

The West Bengal Police arrested BJP leader Sukanta Majumdar to prevent him from visiting the violence-hit Beldanga area. The arrest was made under Section 170 of the BNSS.

The West Bengal Police on Wednesday afternoon made a preventive arrest of BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar in Krishnanagar, Nadia district, as he attempted to visit the violence-hit Beldanga area in neighbouring Murshidabad district. The action was taken under Section 170 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), which allows arrests to prevent the commission of cognisable offences, a senior police officer said.

According to the officer from the Krishnanagar Police District, Majumdar was heading to an area under prohibitory orders imposed in response to recent communal clashes, news agency PTI reported. "We cannot allow anyone to enter Beldanga as prohibitory orders have been imposed there. That is the reason Majumdar was stopped today," the officer told PTI.

Majumdar’s convoy was intercepted around 70 km from Beldanga. After being stopped, the BJP leader staged a sit-in protest at the site, claiming he had no intention of disrupting the peace. "Police are saying that prohibitory orders have been imposed in the area, hence I cannot go there. We are not going there to create any law and order situation. We have asked them to escort us to the DM or SP office, but they are unwilling to let us go there," Majumdar told reporters.

Speaking after his arrest by Kotwali police station, Majumdar said, "I was trying to go to Beldanga to review the situation there. Our party workers have put up road blockades in other areas in protest against the police preventing us from going to Beldanga."

Taking to X, he posted, "Today, even before reaching Beldanga, the sycophantic administration stopped us like cowards. Be it Beldanga or Shyampur, our fight to ensure the safety and security of every Bengali Hindu on the soil of West Bengal will continue relentlessly."

"Raising the voice of Hindus has become the biggest crime under Mamata Banerjee's rule in Bengal. My arrest today stands as proof of this. Mamata Banerjee's regime is ruthlessly tearing apart Bengal’s social fabric. Tyranny will not silence us!" he wrote in a prior post.

BJP workers held a protest against Sukanta Majumdar's detention.

Clashes In Beldanga

The clashes in Beldanga, which erupted on Saturday night, were reportedly triggered by an objectionable message displayed on a temporary gate erected for Kartik Puja. The violence has left at least 17 people injured, with properties also damaged.

To restore order, the district administration imposed prohibitory orders, suspended internet services, and deployed a significant police presence in the area. Law enforcement cited these measures as the basis for preventing Majumdar’s visit.
