Union Cabinet Approves Phase II Of Chennai Metro Rail Project With 3 Corridors, CM Stalin Thanks PM Modi

The completion cost of the Chennai Metro Rail project phase 2 is Rs 63,246 crore. It is expected to be completed by 2027.

The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday approved the proposal to construct three corridors under the Chennai Metro Rail project phase-II. The proposal was put forward by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.

The completion cost of the project is Rs 63,246 crore and it is planned to be completed by 2027. The total length of the approved lines will be 118.9 kilometre with 128 metro stations. Upon its completion, Chennai will have a total network of 173 km.

According to the government statement, the first corridor will be from Madhavaram to SIPCOT with a length of 45.8 km and 50 metro stations. The second corridor will cover Lighthouse to Poonamalle Bypass across 26.1 km with 30 stations. The third corridor, proposed from Madhavaram to Sholinganallur corridor, will have a length of 47 km with 48 metro stations. 

The Phase-II of Chennai Metro Rail Project is a major advancement in the city's infrastructure development, which will significantly expand its metro rail network. The government said in its statement that the Phase-II Chennai Metro Rail Project will be transformative development for the city.

CM MK Stalin Thanks PM Modi For Approving Phase II Metro Corridor

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Thursday thanked PM Modi after the Union Cabinet approved the proposal to construct three corridors under the Chennai Metro Rail project phase-II. He said that he had placed a request with the PM regarding this recently.

"Thank you, Hon'ble PM Thiru.Narendra Modi, for accepting our request during my last meeting with you and approving the second phase of the Chennai Metro Rail Project. This long pending demand of the people of Tamil Nadu having been addressed now, we are confident of completing the project at the earliest !," he said in a post on X.  

The Tamil Nadu CM further recalled his meeting with the PM on September 27 in New Delhi.
