Undertrial Prisoner Escapes Police Custody, Threatens MNS Leader At Mumbai Party Office
Undertrial prisoner Imran Khan escaped court custody, threatened MNS leader Amit Matkar at party office; police suspended two constables and launched an investigation.

Mumbai, the city of dreams and India’s film capital, witnessed a dramatic incident when an undertrial prisoner escaped police custody and allegedly threatened a political leader, raising serious concerns about Mumbai Police’s vigilance and security procedures.
According to sources, the incident occurred on May 16, when Imran Khan—an undertrial lodged in Arthur Road Jail—was brought to court for a scheduled hearing in a drugs case. Following the hearing, Khan was supposed to be escorted back to jail under police supervision. However, in a surprising turn of events, he managed to leave the court premises without attracting attention.
Wearing a mask and riding a motorcycle reportedly arranged by a friend, Khan reached the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) office located in the Saat Rasta area. There, he confronted Amit Matkar, Vice-President of the party's Kamgar Sena wing.
Khan reportedly told Matkar, "This place is not for you, go away from here, otherwise be ready to face the consequences." The confrontation was captured on CCTV cameras installed outside the MNS office.
A formal complaint was lodged by Matkar with the police on May 21, and the CCTV footage was submitted as evidence. However, no FIR had been registered by the time of reporting.
Imran Khan was arrested by the Mumbai Crime Branch in December 2024 in possession of 40 kg of ganja and has been in judicial custody since then. Following this recent incident, concerns have been raised about possible negligence or collusion on the part of the police escort team.
In response to growing criticism, Mumbai Police have suspended two constables—Amol Sarkale and Sandeep Suryavanshi—who were on duty during the court appearance. A DCP-level officer has been assigned to investigate the matter further.
