Traffic Challans Worth Rs 89 Lakh Issued On New Year In Mumbai, 17,800 Motorists Penalised

The Mumbai traffic police has penalised 17,800 motorists and collected penalties worth Rs 89.19 lakh for the violation of road rules during the New Year celebrations in the city.
The Mumbai police conducted the drive from the New Year's eve till the early hours of Wednesday, a report in PTI said.
"Action was taken against people indulging in drunk driving, causing obstruction to the free flow of traffic, riding motorbikes without wearing helmet, jumping signals and entering one-way roads," the traffic police official said.

Motorists were also fined for speed violations, driving four-wheelers without wearing seat belt and using mobile phone while driving, the police further said. The traffic police collected Rs 89,19,750 as fines via e-challan from the traffic norm violators.
A large number of people assembled at prominent places in Mumbai, including Gateway of India, Marine Drive, Bandra Bandstand and Juhu Chowpatty, to celebrate the New Year. Security was tightened at key locations in the city to avoid any untoward incident, the official said.
On the New Year's eve, more than 14,000 police personnel were deployed in the Maharashtra capital as part of elaborate security arrangements to maintain law and order.
More than 12,000 police constables, 2,184 officers, 53 assistant commissioners, 29 deputy commissioners and eight additional commissioner-rank officers were deployed as part of the security arrangements.
450 Traffic Violators Fined In Latur
Police in Maharashtra's Latur took action against 461 people for indulging in traffic violations, of whom 55 were booked for drunk driving, officials said on Wednesday.
The action was taken during the intervening night of December 31 and January 1. The police collected a fine of Rs 3.41 lakh from the offenders for overspeeding and other violations.
The drive was conducted across all 23 police stations in Latur district, for which checkpoints were set up.It was carried out under the leadership of Latur Superintendent of Police Somay Munde.
