'Stop Poking Your Nose In Bengal. Else...': Mamata's Warning To Assam CM Himanta

Mamata Banerjee slammed Assam CM Sarma for "interfering" in Bengal's affairs, threatening protests. This followed an accusation by Sarma that Mamata was pursuing appeasement politics.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday, July 21, slammed her Assam counterpart Himanta Biswa Sarma for "poking his nose" in Bengal's affairs. "Assam CM, you can't handle Assam, and you are poking your nose in Bengal? Stop this; otherwise, I shall ask [TMC MP] Sushmita Dev to start a movement against you. We all shall go. Let's see how you send us to detention camps," she said.

The Mamata-vs-Himanta battle ensued last week when the Bengal CM accused Sarma of dividing people on the basis of language and religion. Himanta hit back, saying: "While we are acting decisively to preserve Assam’s identity, you, Didi, have compromised Bengal’s future—encouraging illegal encroachment by a particular community, appeasing one religious community for vote banks, and remaining silent as border infiltration eats away at national integrity—all just to stay in power."

'Break BJP's Double-Engine'

Mamata Banerjee further urged people to break the BJP's rule in Delhi. "Break the BJP's double-engine government, and remove them. We do not respect those who are trying to divide Bengal. What's happening to the Bengali language is unacceptable. If any Bengali is arrested just for speaking Bangla, this fight will go all the way to Delhi."

Mamata Slams Language Intolerance

took a firm stand against what she called rising language intolerance across India. Addressing a public rally in Kolkata, she asked pointedly, "Is speaking in Bengali a crime? Why have we stopped? Why are we questioned?"

Her comments came at a time when language-based debates are flaring up across the country.

Banerjee warned that any attempt to suppress Bengali in West Bengal, as, she claimed, has happened in Bihar, would face strong resistance from the Trinamool Congress. "We shall impose blockades. We shall not let ourselves be divided," she declared.

'Bengali Is Our Identity'

Highlighting Bengal's cultural legacy, she said, "This land gave birth to Rabindranath Tagore. It's where 'Jana Gana Mana' and 'Vande Mataram' originated." Banerjee made it clear that while she respects all Indian languages, any hatred or discrimination against Bengali is unacceptable.

She also invoked Bengal's contribution to the freedom struggle: "Bengalis played an active role in India's fight for independence. No one else can do what the people of West Bengal can. Our language is our identity, and we will not tolerate any attempt to suppress it."

Language Tensions Rising Nationwide

Her remarks come amid growing unrest over language politics in several parts of the country. In Maharashtra, for instance, there's growing anger over what many see as attempts to undermine Marathi. Critics argue that imposing Hindi or any other language violates the spirit of the Constitution.
