RG Kar Case: Protesting Doctors In Kolkata Agree To Meet CM Mamata At Nabanna. But Have This Condition

RG Kar Protest: Doctors protesting in Kolkata over the rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital have agreed to meet Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee but on a condition.

RG Kar Case: The doctors protesting in Kolkata over the rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital have agreed to meet Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. However, their agreement was conditional. The CM on Tuesday had invited the protesting doctors to hold talks to resolve the impasse over the demand for "justice" in the case. However, the doctors turned down the invitation, alleging that the "language of the invitation was disrespectful".

Mamata Banerjee's invitation for talks specified a delegation of 10 protesters who may meet the government representatives. However, the doctors on Wednesday said that they would meet the government representatives at Nabanna, the state secretariat, only if a delegation of at least 30 protesters is allowed. The doctors also demanded that the meeting be telecast live to ensure transparency amongst all parties.

Sources said a meeting will be held with the government today itself if the condition is met.

Despite the Supreme Court's oral directions to return to work, the junior doctors continued their agitation beyond 5 PM on Tuesday. On Monday, Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud said: "We have given two days. The young doctors must now return and resume work. We know what is happening on the ground. First, return to work... You have to now return to work and if you do not come to work, do not hold anyone responsible for disciplinary action against you. You cannot say that seniors are working so we will not.." CJI Chandrachud said. "Protest cannot be at the cost of duty," the CJI added.

The protesting junior doctors sat throughout the night, defying the Supreme Court's directions. They said they would not budge until their demand for "justice" was met. On Tuesday, the protesters addressed a press conference where they said that there was an attempt to tarnish the image of junior doctors and blamed the Bengal government for the same.
