Two Dead, Several Injured After Bridge Collapses Over Indrayani River In Pune; Rescue Ops Underway

A bridge over the Indrayani River in Pune collapsed on Sunday evening, resulting in one fatality and critical injuries to five others. The incident is under investigation, and rescue efforts are underway to ensure no one else is trapped.

Two dead and 32 have been injured after a portion of a bridge over the Indrayani River in Pune collapsed on Sunday evening. The bridge, which connects two sides of the Kundmala area, collapsed while several tourists were standing on it. Being a weekend, a large number of visitors were present at the site. The incident reportedly took place around 3:30 PM. A total of 32 people have been rescued.

According to sources, the bridge was in a dilapidated condition and may have collapsed due to excess weight when some motorcycles attempted to cross it. The Pimpri-Chinchwad Police Commissionerate's Talegaon Dabhade Police have reached the site, and two NDRF teams are on their way. Rescue vans, fire tender boats, and around 20 to 22 ambulances have been deployed. The area has now been sealed off for tourists and locals as rescue operations continue.

"The bridge over the Indrayani River at Kundmala in Maval taluka of Pune district has collapsed. There is a fear that some citizens on the bridge may have been swept away. This incident is extremely unfortunate, and we pray to God that all these citizens are safe. I have spoken with the District Collector of Pune regarding this incident, and they are sending all necessary assistance. I humbly request citizens to please take necessary precautions while traveling for monsoon tourism. Strictly adhere to safety regulations," Supriya Sule posted on X.

NCP MLA Sunil Shelke said that two tourists have unfortunately lost their lives. He added that four to five persons have been rescued. Shelke further said that NDRF teams have been deployed.

Speaking on the incident, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that he has spoke to the Divisional Commissioner and the Police Commissioner.

“Some people have been rescued, some are still trapped, and there is a possibility that a few may have been swept away, but there are no confirmed reports of deaths yet so it would be premature to say anything. Rescue operations are underway, and all agencies are present at the spot,” Fadnavis said as quoted by news agency IANS.

In a post on X, Devendra Fadanvis wrote: “I was deeply saddened to hear the news of the tragedy that occurred when a bridge over the Indrayani River collapsed in Indori, near Talegaon in Pune district. According to preliminary information, two people have died in this incident.”

A crane has been called to the site as the efforts continue to remove the collapsed bridge over the river. The rescue operations are ongoing, with the emergency teams working urgently at the scene.

"...It collapsed while people were crossing it. Around 20–25 people were on the bridge at that time. So far, two bodies have been recovered, and the rescue operation is still underway. The families of the victims and a regular crowd have gathered at the site…,” said a rescue team member.
