Plea In Supreme Court Seeks Court-Monitored SIT Probe Into Murshidabad Violence
The situation in violence-hit Murshidabad in West Bengal is gradually returning to normal, with shops reopening and displaced families starting to return, a senior police officer said on Monday.

A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court on Monday seeking a court-monitored SIT probe into Murshidabad violence in West Bengal.
The situation in violence-hit Murshidabad in West Bengal is gradually returning to normal, with shops reopening and displaced families starting to return, a senior police officer said on Monday.
The plea, filed by advocate Shashank Shekhar Jha, also sought the SC's directions to protect the lives and properties vulnerable to the riots.
Three people have been killed and several others injured in the violence that erupted in Suti, Dhulian, Samserganj and Jangipur areas of Murshidabad since Friday. The Bengal police have arrested 210 people so far.
Senior Border Security Force (BSF) officials visited the violence-hit areas of Murshidabad and assured residents of all necessary assistance to restore peace and ensure their safety.
A BSF delegation led by Additional Director General (East) Ravi Gandhi visited several disturbed pockets under Suti and Samserganj police station areas, as well as Dhulian — all in the Muslim-majority district that witnessed widespread unrest over the weekend.
According to a statement by the South Bengal Frontier of the BSF, Gandhi reached Malda earlier in the day and conducted an intensive tour of the violence-hit areas, accompanied by Inspector General of South Bengal Frontier Karni Singh Shekhawat and other senior officers.
"The team interacted with the victims and local residents, assuring them of the force's full support. We spoke to people and assured them of their safety and security. We interacted with the locals and our jawans posted there. The situation is slowly returning to normal," Gandhi told PTI after the visit.
A senior police officer said that the situation in violence-hit areas of Murshidabad district, mainly Suti, Samserganj, Dhulian and Jangipur was peaceful and under control on Monday.
Prohibitory orders under section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) remain in force in the violence-hit pockets where the roads wore a deserted look and shops downed their shutters.
The internet remains suspended in the affected areas while security forces are conducting checks on vehicles along the main roads.
"The situation in and around these disturbed areas is peaceful and under control. There is no report of any untoward incident from anywhere in the district of Murshidabad. Police deployment is there and we will not allow any form of nuisance to disturb peace," the police officer told PTI.
