Mumbai: Fire Breaks Out At BKC Metro Station's Basement, Services Suspended For Over 2 Hours

Mumbai News: A fire broke out in the basement of BKC Metro Station, causing smoke and disruption of services. Firefighters controlled the blaze, confining it to construction material and furniture.

A fire broke out on Friday afternoon in the basement of the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) metro underground station in Maharashtra's Mumbai, causing the suspension of train services, officials said.  The blaze, which erupted around 1:10 pm, was confined to wooden sheets, furniture, and construction materials located 40-50 feet below the station. The fire was concentrated in a non-operational section of the station under construction, near the A4 entry/exit.

No injuries have been reported so far, according to a civic official, news agency PTI reported. Eight fire engines, along with other fire brigade vehicles, were dispatched to control the situation.

Eight fire engines and additional firefighting vehicles were dispatched to the site. The firefighting operation, supported by the Mumbai police, Adani Power, 108 Ambulance, Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC), the Public Works Department (PWD), and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), lasted for nearly two hours before the blaze was extinguished at 3:11 pm. Following the clearance from the fire department at 2:45 pm, metro services were resumed.

Mumbai Metro 3, through a post on its official X handle, stated, "Passenger services at BKC station are temporarily closed due to a fire outside Entry/Exit A4, which caused smoke to enter the station. Fire Brigade is on the job. For passenger safety, we have paused services. Senior Officers of MMRC & DMRC are at site. Please proceed to Bandra Colony station for alternative boarding. Thank you for your understanding."

In another post, it informed that train services at BKC Metro Station were fully restored.

The BKC metro station is part of the 12.69 km-long Phase 1 of the MMRC's Mumbai Metro Line-3 (Aqua Line), which connects Aarey JVLR and BKC. This line was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi last month.

In a statement issued by MMRC at 3:35 pm, the organisation clarified that the fire occurred near the A4 entry/exit, which is still under construction. Despite the fire causing smoke leakage into the operational areas, metro services between Aarey JVLR and Bandra Colony remained unaffected, the MMRC confirmed.
