Who Is Suma Uikey, Mentioned In PM Modi's 'Mann Ki Baat' Address

Modi has highlighted other inspiring individuals from Madhya Pradesh in his earlier radio broadcasts, including a tribal artist, a teacher , and a water conservationist.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in the 123rd episode of his radio programme Mann Ki Baat, addressed the nation on Sunday and shared inspiring stories of women who are shaping India’s future. He declared that “women-led development” is no longer merely a slogan but has become a guiding mantra defining the country’s path forward.

“Today, the mothers, sisters, and daughters of our country are not only empowering themselves but are also creating new avenues for society at large. Their confidence, decision-making abilities, and dedication to society are steering India towards self-reliance and inclusive growth,” Modi said.

During his address, the Prime Minister spotlighted the story of Suma Uikey from Balaghat district in Madhya Pradesh. He shared how Suma joined a self-help group in Katangi block, receiving training in mushroom cultivation and animal husbandry. Through determination and hard work, she gradually increased her income and expanded her ventures to include the ‘Didi Canteen’ and a ‘Thermal Therapy Centre.’

“Today, Suma Uikey is not just an entrepreneur but a source of inspiration for rural women, demonstrating that with strong willpower, one can achieve great heights even with limited resources,” Modi said.

The monthly PM's radio broadcast has, over the years, consistently shone a spotlight on inspiring individuals from Madhya Pradesh who have driven transformative change in their communities.

This Sunday’s 123rd episode was no exception, as the Prime Minister highlighted another remarkable story from the state. However, this is far from the first time Madhya Pradesh has featured prominently in the national broadcast.

From Jhabua, tribal artist Bhuri Bai earned mention in earlier episodes for her exceptional contributions to Bhil art. Once a daily wage labourer, Bhuri Bai has risen to national recognition, even receiving the prestigious Padma Shri, helping bring global attention to indigenous artistic traditions.

In Betul district, government school teacher Sunil Jagirdar was lauded for transforming a rural classroom into a hub of innovation and digital learning. His efforts showcased how dedicated educators can bridge the urban-rural divide and foster community pride in local schools.

Ramesh Sharma from Sehore was similarly acknowledged for his significant work in water conservation. Through the revival of traditional ponds and the promotion of rainwater harvesting, Sharma has played a vital role in securing long-term water sustainability for local farmers in drought-prone areas.
