Governor Orders Upcoming Manipur Assembly Session 'Null And Void' After CM Biren Singh's Resignation

The 7th session of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly, scheduled to begin on February 10th, has been canceled by a notice from the Assembly secretary.

Hours after N Biren Singh stepped down as the Chief Minister of Manipur, the Governor declared the upcoming session of Manipur Legislative Assembly as "null and void" with immediate effect, according to a notice issued by Assembly secretary K. Meghajit Singh on Sunday.

As per the details, it was said in the notice, "In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (1) of Article 174 of the Constitution of India, I, Ajay Kumar Bhalla, Governor of Manipur, hereby order that the previous directive to summon the 7th session of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly, which has yet to commence, is hereby declared null and void with immediate effect."

On the resignation of Manipur CM, Gaurav Gogoi, Deputy Leader of Congress in Lok Sabha, said, "The resignation of the N Biren Singh is not aimed to save the people of Manipur, but the BJP government in the state. Home Minister Amit Shah stepped in after knowing that BJP will lose the no confidence motion. I don’t think the BJP have any roadmap to return peace and normalcy to the state of Manipur. It is in the DNA of the party to put its own interests above the needs of the people."

Speaking about the Opposition's move on no confidence motion and CM's resignation, Manipur PWD minister Govindas Konthoujam said that moving a no confidence motion is the liberty of the opposition party, however, there are only five MLAs in the opposition. He added that there are some differences of opinion among the ruling MLA but all are still intact.

N Biren Singh on Sunday resigned from the CM post as the state remains in the grip of an ethnic violence for over two years. Singh reached the Raj Bhavan in Imphal on Sunday and submitted his letter of resignation to Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla.

As per the information, the new CM pick is expected to be announced shortly by the party ahead of the assemby session.

Singh was accompanied by 14 MLAs from BJP and Naga People's Front (NPF). Manipur BJP president and senior party leader Sambit Patra were also the part of the delegation.

In his letter, Singh said, "It has been an honour to serve the people of Manipur thus far. I am extremely grateful to the central government for time actions, interventions, developmental work and implementation of various projects for safeguarding the interests of every single Manipuri."
