TMC Leader Shot Dead In Kolkata, MLA Blames ISF

A local MLA blamed the Indian Secular Front for the attack, alleging political motivation. Police are investigating, reviewing CCTV footage, and conducting an autopsy.

A Trinamool Congress leader was shot dead near his residence in Kolkata's Bhangar Chaltaberia on Thursday night. Rajjak Khan was returning home after a party meeting when unidentified attackers opened fire at him, according to the police.

Around 9:45 pm on Thursday, one Rajjak Khan of Chak Maricha village, Chaltaberia Gram Panchayat, was attacked by a few persons near Siristala under Utter Kashipore police station while returning home, said the Kolkata police in a statement, reported ANI.

He was rushed to a hospital and was declared dead there, the police said, adding that an investigation has been launched into the incident.

As Khan fell to the ground after being shot at, the attackers attacked him with sharp weapons, and the TMC worker died before he could be taken to the hospital, reported The Times of India.

Canning East MLA Saokat Molla blamed the Indian Secular Front, saying the attack was carried out by party-backed miscreants.

Rajjak was returning home after party work. The attackers not only shot him, but also slashed his neck. They should be arrested immediately," said Molla, who was known to be close to Khan.

"Rajjak Khan was our active and strong worker and leader in the Bhangar Assembly area. ISF-supported anti-social elements have done this under the instructions of Noushad Siddiqui," Molla said, reported IANS.

"There is no space for ISF in the Bhangar area, which is why they are resorting to such acts. We have requested the police and the Chief Minister to arrest them immediately," he added.

Police said they are scanning CCTV footage of the vicinity to track the killers and have questioned several locals. An autopsy will be done on Friday, an officer said, according to TOI.

The officer said that gunshots and deep wounds caused by a sharp weapon are evident on the body. Multiple assailants allegedly came on bikes. The spot where the crime took place is deserted and next to a canal, the officer said.
