A journalist was arrested by Assam police after covering a protest against the Assam Co-operative Apex Bank.

Dilwar Huissain Mozumdar was arrested by the Assam police on Tuesday night after detaining him for several hours. He was detained following his coverage of a protest against the Assam Co-operative Apex Bank (ACAB).

According to The Indian Express, Hussain is a reporter with the Assam-based digital media portal The CrossCurrent. He also currently holds the post of assistant general secretary of the Guwahati Press Club.

According to the report, the grounds for his arrest presented to his family state that he was arrested for the alleged criminal intimidation and violation of provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act for “offensive remarks” against the complainant.

“The FIR and the complainant’s statement clearly establish the accused verbally accused the complainant using offensive and derogatory remarks, such as ‘Boro jati hoi tumi besi kora’ (being from the Boro tribe, you do too much), which was intended to demean and insult the complainant… The accused’s remarks were not only offensive but also hurt the emotional and psychological sentiments of the complainant, causing distress and mental agony,” states the notice of information on the grounds of arrest issued by the ACP, Chandmari as quoted by The Indian Express.

The report quoting The CrossCurrent editor Arup Kalita reported that Mozumdar went to the bank premises on Tuesday to cover a proteste called by the Asom Jatiya Parishad’s youth wing Jatiya Yuva Shakti. He said that Mozumdar has written about the irregularities in the bank in the past as well. The Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is the director of the ACAB.
