NC Eyes Rajya Sabha Seats After Govt Formation In J-K, Congress Likely To Get One Seat

Out of the four seats, the NC is likely to send two leaders, including Farooq Abdullah to the upper house. The party is also expected to send another leader from Jammu to the Parliament.

National Conference (NC) leader Omar Abdullah is set to take oath as the new chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday. Preparations have been put in place for the oath ceremony of the chief minister and his council of ministers at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Convention Centre (SKICC) on Wednesday.

The NC-Congress government is likely to fill up the vacant Rajya Sabha seats in Jammu and Kashmir immediately after the government formation.

Out of the four seats, the NC is likely to send two leaders, including Farooq Abdullah to the upper house. The party is also expected to send another leader from Jammu to the Parliament.

Meanwhile, the Congress is likely to get one seat, while the BJP is expected to capture the fourth seat based on its strength in the assembly.

Jammu and Kashmir has four Rajya Sabha seats which fell vacant since February 2021 as all four MPs elected in February 2015 completed their six-year term.

The Rajya Sabha elections in the Union Territory was delayed due to the absence of Legislative Assembly.

In the recently held assembly polls, Abdullah-led NC won the assembly elections held after a decade. Abdullah was unanimously elected as the leader of the NC legislature party, paving the way for his second term as the chief minister of J&K.

The NC won 42 of the 90 seats for which elections were held in three phases with the alliance partner Congress bagging six seats. Although the two parties have a majority in the 95-member House, four Independents and the lone AAP MLA have also extended their support to the NC.

Meanwhile, the chief minister and his ministers will be administered the oath of office and secrecy by J-K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha at 11:30 am tomorrow. Security has been tightened around the venue of the swearing-in ceremony, as per the officials.
