Heavy Rains Trigger Deadly Landslides, Floods In Northeast; 16 Dead Across Assam, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh

Heavy rains triggered landslides and floods in Northeast India, causing at least 16 deaths in Assam, Mizoram, and Arunachal Pradesh.

Five persons were killed in landslides in Assam in the past 24 hours as heavy rain led to floods in the six districts, affecting over 10,000 people, reports news PTI quoting an official bulletin on Saturday. Three districts in the western part of the state remained on 'red alert', and eight more were on 'orange alert', as per Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) data, while rainwaters from upstream areas in Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya aggravated the flood situation in the state.

Five deaths have been reported from the Kamrup Metropolitan District, according to the Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA). Urban Affairs Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah had on Friday said that three members of a family, a mother-daughter duo and a niece, were killed in a landslide in the Bonda area on the outskirts of Guwahati. He also inspected the situation in different parts of the city during the day to assess the prevailing situation and review the government's emergency response measures.
