NRI Arrested Over Fauja Singh’s Death, Claims He Didn’t Know Marthoner Until Watching The News

Punjab police arrested Amritpal Singh Dhillon, a 30-year-old NRI, for the hit-and-run death of 114-year-old marathoner Fauja Singh.

The Punjab police have arrested Amritpal Singh Dhillon, a 30-year-old NRI in connection with the hit-and-run death of legendary marathoner Fauja Singh. The SUV involved in the hit-and-run has also been recovered and the arrest came within 30 hours of the incident that claimed the life of the 114-year-old athlete.

The accused, a resident of Dasupur village in Jalandhar district's Kartarpur, was taken into custody on Tuesday night, according to India Today, and is at present being questioned at the Bhogpur police station.

Dhillon is expected to be produced before a court on Wednesday and is likely to be remanded to police custody.

Following Fauja Singh's death, the officials compiled a list of suspect vehicles and identified a Fortuner SUV late Tuesday evening, as per the police.

Preliminary investigation also revealed that the SUV was registered in the name of Varinder Singh, a resident of Kapurthala.

Police teams in Jalandhar promptly set out for Kapurthal to question Varinder Singh. During the interrogation, Singh told the police that he had sold the car two years ago to Amritpal Singh Dhillon, an NRI who had recently returned from Canada.

After the accident, the accused reportedly bypassed Jalandhar city and instead drove through various villages to reach his native village in Kartarpur, police said.

As per the report, Dhillon confessed to his involvement during the initial interrogation. He said that he was returning from Mukerian after selling his phone when his vehicle struck an elderly person near Bias Pind.

Dhillon claimed he did not know about the victim at the time of the accident and only learnt about it through news reports.

Popularly known as the "Turbaned Tornado", Fauja Singh died on Monday after being hit by an unidentified vehicle during a walk in his native village of Bias in Jalandhar district.
