Chennai news: Late Thursday night, Chennai widespread power outage that left large portions of the city in darkness. Several neighborhoods, including Mylapore, RA Puram, Perambur, Washermanpet, Manali, Vyasarpadi, and others, experienced prolonged blackouts. The affected areas ranged from Manali to Mint, and complaints of power disruptions were also reported in Velachery, Besant Nagar, and Thiruvanmiyur.
South Chennai MP Thamizhachi Thangapandian took to social media to express concern, stating, "The power outage and blackout are a matter of concern. I spoke to TANGEDCO officials just now, and they are working to restore power at the earliest. Please be patient and vigilant. Will update as soon as possible."
The outage caused significant inconvenience, particularly for elderly residents, prompting some to seek assistance. Frustrated residents took to the streets, staging protests and demanding a swift restoration of the electricity supply.

Cause Of Blackout: Fire At Manali Substation
TANGEDCO's Managing Director, Rajesh Lakhani, confirmed that a fire broke out at the Manali substation in North Chennai, which triggered the massive power outage. Efforts to restore power began immediately, with TANGEDCO working on a bypass line to reestablish the supply.
Taking to X, TANGEDCO said, the fire caused sequential faults on both feeders at the Manali 400/230kV substation, which impacted the city's power supply. However, the team reportedly swiftly rerouted power through alternate pathways to restore supply gradually.
TANGEDCO communicated via social media that they had "stepped up from 230KV to 400KV and rerouted power through Pulianthope, ensuring uninterrupted power to the city." The department praised its dedicated team for working tirelessly to resolve the fault at NCTPS II, ultimately restoring the substation by 6:00 a.m. the following morning.
