Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan was stabbed by an unidentified intruder during an attempted burglary at his residence in Mumbai on Thursday. The 54-year-old actor sustained injuries to his neck and near his spine but is now out of danger after undergoing surgery at Lilavati Hospital.

After the incident, Mumbai Police arrived at his Bandra West apartment complex, Satguru Sharan, in order to investigate the incident with renowned encounter specialist Daya Nayak among the officers on the scene.

The police revealed that the attacker, now identified, entered the home around 2:30 a.m. through the fire escape in an attempted robbery. Saif reportedly tried to intervene, leading to the altercation during which he was stabbed. A CCTV footage has also surfaced of the alleged attacker fleeing from the staircase of the building after the attack

Know Who Is Encounter Specialist 'Daya Nayak'

As per News 18 reports, the Mumbai Police officer, Daya Nayak, widely known as an ‘encounter specialist’ began his career as a trainee in 1995 and was posted to the Juhu police station in 1996. Over the years, he has reportedly neutralized more than 80 criminals in encounters and now serves in the Mumbai Police Crime Branch.

According to a report by Economics Times, Nayak hails from a Konkani-speaking family in Udupi, Karnataka, where he was the youngest child of Badda and Radha Nayak. After completing Class 7 in a Kannada-medium school in his village, he moved to Mumbai (then Bombay) in 1979 to support his family financially. His first job in the city was at a local hotel.

Despite financial hardships, Nayak persevered, completing Class 12 at a municipal school in Goregaon while living in the portico of the hotel where he worked. He later graduated from CES College in Andheri, driven by a strong determination to uplift his family.

His aspiration to become a police officer developed during his college years when he encountered narcotics officers while apprenticing as a plumber. Inspired by their work, Nayak pursued his dream and joined the police force in 1995 as a sub-inspector at Juhu Police Station after completing his academy training.

His reputation was heightened when he killed two gangsters linked with the Chhota Rajan syndicate during an encounter at Juhu in December 1996. As a result, this act prompted him to earn widespread recognition within the police department.

Controversies Against Daya Nayak

Despite his reputation for heroism, Daya Nayak's career has been clouded by controversies. In 2004, the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) court ordered the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) to investigate allegations that Nayak had amassed wealth disproportionate to his income.

The ACB conducted raids at six locations, including two in Bangalore, uncovering claims that Nayak owned two fleets of luxury buses—one operating under the name Vishal Travels in Mumbai and the other in Karkala, Karnataka.

After these findings, Nayak was arrested by the ACB. However, after years of legal and professional struggles, he was reinstated in 2012 as an additional commissioner of police in the West control room, marking his return to active duty nearly 15 years after his rise to prominence.

Nayak also drew attention when he was spotted at Bollywood actor Salman Khan's residence alongside other Mumbai police officials, following an incident where gunshots were fired outside Khan's house by two motorbike-borne assailants.
