Bihar Floods: Kosi River Ravages Darbhanga, Cuts Off Villages; Situation Remains Grim In 16 Districts

Flooding in Bihar worsens as Kosi River breaches dam, affecting villages in Darbhanga. Embankments in several villages were also breached while a total of 16 districts remained affected by floods.

The flood situation in Bihar remained grim on Tuesday as the Kosi river ravaged many parts of the Darbhanga district cutting off several villages from the district headquarters. A dam near Bhubaul village broke due to which villages of Kiratpur and Bhagwanpur are in the grip of floods.

While teams of National and State Disaster Response Forces have launched search and rescue operations in the flood-affected districts, the villagers here said that there were no rescue teams in their village. They also claimed that the government's assistance was not reaching them.

One of the villagers, speaking to ABP News, said that they stacked sacks of sand to stop the floodwater. They asked the police officials to provide them with more sacks and sand but they were not provided with it.

"We asked for sand and sacks from the DM so that we could try to save our lives but nothing happened," he said.

Sitmarhi and Sheohar districts also faced the brunt of floods with several villages submerged in water. The floodwater breached four embankments in Sitarmarhi and one in Sheohar adding to the woes of the people.

As many as 9 lakh people across 16 districts have been affected by the floods following the release of over six lakh cusecs of water by adjoining Nepal, which has been lashed by torrential rains, according to officials.

While no casualties have been reported so far, around three people have gone missing in the state.

The districts which have been affected by the floods include East Champaran, West Champaran, Araria, Kishanganj, Gopalganj, Sitamarhi, Sheohar, Supaul, Siwan, Madhepura, Muzaffarpur, Purnea, Madhubani, Darbhanga, Saran and Saharsa.

About 9.90 lakh population under 269 Gram Panchayats in 55 blocks of these 16 districts have been affected by the floods. The embankment has broken at eight places in Bihar. On the other hand, in view of the flood, 15-15 teams of NDRF and SDRF are engaged in flood relief and rescue work.
