Atishi Accuses Delhi Govt Of Rejecting Discussion On Law and Order In Assembly, Writes To Speaker

Atishi claimed that AAP MLAs had raised concerns about the increasing crime, but their questions were removed as "law and order does not fall under the jurisdiction of the Assembly."

Aam Aadmi Party leader and Leader of Opposition in Delhi Assembly Atishi on Thursday wrote a letter to speaker Vijender Gupta, accusing the double-engine government of rejecting discussion on the law and order situation in the city. She alleged that discussion of questions on law and order issues put forward by the opposition members was dismissed, adding that the Delhi government has "failed".

"The double engine government has failed, so it does not want a discussion," she said.

Atishi slammed the "shocking" decision as she raised questions over why discussions on rising crime rate in the city, including crimes such as murder, robbery, rape, and shootings were being prevented from being discussed in the Delhi Assembly.

She claimed that AAP MLAs had raised concerns about the increasing crime in their constituencies, but their questions were removed with the justification that "law and order does not fall under the jurisdiction of the Assembly."  

Taking strong objection to this, Atishi wrote a letter to Speaker Vijender Gupta on behalf of the party, questioning whether incidents like rape or shootings in Delhi would remain undiscussed in the Assembly. She also criticised the BJP-led central government over its failure to control crime and avoiding discussions on the issue.  

Atishi Urges Speaker To Ensure Discussions On All Delhi Issues

In her letter to the Speaker, Atishi highlighted that under Rule 280, the Assembly had allocated time for special mentions. Several AAP MLAs had submitted issues related to rising crime in their areas, but she received a call from the Assembly Secretariat on Wednesday evening, informing her that five MLAs' special mentions had been rejected with the reasoning that the Delhi Legislative Assembly does not have the power to address such issues.

Calling this decision "unprecedented," Atishi argued that it was the first time since the formation of the Delhi Assembly that such discussions were being barred. "If rape happens in Delhi or bullets are fired in the streets, should this not be discussed in the Assembly? " she asked the Speaker in her letter.

Atishi further alleged that the BJP-led central government was trying to avoid discussions to "hide its failure" in controlling crime in Delhi, adding that preventing them would not solve problems of the people in the national capital. "Before elections, BJP claimed that a double-engine government would solve Delhi’s problems, but after winning, they now refuse to even discuss these issues. No discussion means no problem!" she said.  

Atishi urged Speaker Vijender Gupta to ensure discussions on all issues concerning Delhi are carried out in the Assembly, stating that preventing such discussions would be an insult to democracy.
