Ahmedabad: 2 Killed In Drunk Driving Case As Speeding SUV Jumps Divider, Collides With Scooter

In Ahmedabad, two men were killed in a collision with a speeding Hyundai Creta that jumped the road divider. The intoxicated driver, Gopal Patel, was arrested.

In a case of reckless driving, two young men were killed on the Naroda-Dehgam road in Gujarat's Ahmedabad when a speeding Hyundai Creta jumped the road divider and crashed into their scooter. The fatal incident, which occurred late on Saturday night, was captured on CCTV.

The driver, identified as Gopal Patel, was reportedly under the influence of alcohol when he lost control of the SUV, NDTV reported. The vehicle, travelling at high speed, overtook an auto-rickshaw, jumped the divider, and collided with a Honda Activa coming from the opposite lane. The two victims, Amit Rathore (26) and Vishal Rathore (27), died on the spot.

CCTV footage reveals the SUV being airborne for several seconds before the crash, tilted to one side, indicating its excessive speed. After the accident, local residents and passersby apprehended Patel, assaulted him, and handed him over to the police, as per NDTV's report.

Ahmedabad Rural Police Chief Om Prakash Jat confirmed the arrest, stating, “Police have arrested the accused. A case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder has been registered.”

Ramji sustained injuries to his hands and legs after being thrown off and narrowly avoided being run over by a dumper that braked in time. Another officer, who held onto the car’s window, was also thrown off.

The couple, comprising the driver and his wife, has been charged with attempted murder and causing grievous hurt to a public servant. “The woman signalled her husband to flee. Both have been arrested, and further investigation is underway,” a Chandkheda police station official said, as quoted by PTI.
