Tesla Enters Indian Market, Anand Mahindra Says ‘See You At The Charging Station’

Tesla, the world’s most prominent EV brand, launched its first showroom in India today, debuting with the Model Y — currently the world’s top-selling electric vehicle.

As Tesla made its official foray into the Indian electric vehicle (EV) market, Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra extended a warm welcome to both the brand and its CEO Elon Musk, expressing optimism about the possibilities the entry brings to India’s growing EV landscape.

Taking to social media platform X, Mahindra shared his enthusiasm for the development, posting: “Welcome to India, Elon Musk and Tesla.” He further added, “One of the world’s largest EV opportunities just got more exciting. Competition drives innovation, and there is plenty of road ahead. Looking forward to seeing you at the charging station.”

Tesla, the world’s most prominent EV brand, launched its first showroom in India today, debuting with the Model Y — currently the world’s top-selling electric vehicle. The company is entering the market with a completely built-up (CBU) unit, and the Model Y is now available in a rear-wheel-drive (RWD) variant.

Tesla Model Y Priced from Rs 59.89 Lakh, Bookings Open

The Model Y RWD version comes with a price tag of Rs 59.89 lakh (ex-showroom), while the Model Y Long Range RWD is priced at Rs 67.89 lakh (ex-showroom). Currently, registrations are restricted to Delhi, Mumbai, and Gurugram. Bookings are now live, and deliveries are expected to commence in the third quarter of 2025. Depending on the buyer’s location, the on-road price could start around Rs 61 lakh.

Indian EV Leader Mahindra Gears Up for Competition

Mahindra & Mahindra, India’s largest SUV maker, has already established its presence in the EV segment with models like the XUV400, BE 6, and XEV 9e. The XUV400 is available between Rs 15.49 lakh and Rs 17.69 lakh (ex-showroom), while the BE 6 ranges from Rs 18.90 lakh to Rs 27.65 lakh. The flagship XEV 9e is priced between Rs 21.90 lakh and Rs 31.25 lakh.

With Tesla’s arrival, India’s EV market is poised for intensified competition and faster innovation—something both legacy players and consumers are likely to benefit from.
