Namita Thapar Slams Sabeer Bhatia Over Comments On Indian Engineers' Work Ethic

Thapar responded sharply to the comments, defending the dedication and capability of Indian engineers and taking issue with what she described as an unfair generalisation

Shark Tank India judge and Emcure Pharmaceuticals Executive Director Namita Thapar has strongly criticised Hotmail co-founder Sabeer Bhatia for his recent remarks questioning the work ethic of Indian engineers. In a podcast appearance, Bhatia stated, “Ninety-nine percent of Indian engineering graduates move into management roles and start giving ‘gyaan' to everyone. But where's the work ethic? Where are the people building real products with their own hands?”

Thapar responded sharply to the comments, defending the dedication and capability of Indian engineers and taking issue with what she described as an unfair generalisation.

Responding to Bhatia’s remarks on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Namita Thapar wrote, “Latest news 'Sabeer Bhatia giving gyan on quality of Indian engineers'. I lived in the US for eight years and met many Indians living there who loved bashing India… Dear government, please note that brain drain is a real concern and needs introspection… however, back to Mr Bhatia… please note that it's easy to move to another country and give gyan, but the real impact and challenge lies in staying in your own country and facilitating change!"

Internet Reacts

Thapar’s remarks sparked a wide range of reactions across social media platforms. While some users applauded her for standing up for Indian engineers and calling out what they saw as an unfair generalisation, others felt her response was overly defensive or missed the nuance in Bhatia’s critique.

“Quality isn't an issue...but our attitude towards innovation and innovators as society definitely is...it doesn't' come easy ..US/China too made coordinated effort 2 change. founders like u v set a gr8 foundation...invite u to speak to innovators in Pune for further real impact,” wrote on of the internet users.

“Though I totally agree with you as I have friends who moved abroad and started bashing our country for everything but I disagree on the point that it’s easy to move to other countries. Getting PR/GC in good countries not that easy now,” added a second user.
