Mumbai International Airport To Redevelop Terminal 1, Project To Begin In November 2025

In the meantime, the capacity gap created by the demolition of the current T1 will be managed by Terminal 2 at the CSMIA and the Navi Mumbai International Airport.

Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) will redevelop Terminal 1 (T1) at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA). The project will expand the capacity of the new terminal by 42 per cent to manage 20 million passengers annually. 

The new Terminal 1 at the airport will have a built-up area of more than 2 million square feet and the project will be carried out in phases to minimise disruption to airport operations. Phase 1 of the project will commence in November 2025. In the meantime, the capacity gap created by the demolition of the current T1 will be managed by Terminal 2 at the CSMIA and the Navi Mumbai International Airport.

As Mumbai continues to soar as an international aviation hub, the new terminal, with a built-up area of over two million sq. ft., is poised to become a hallmark of digitisation and consumer convenience. The redevelopment of Terminal 1 will be carried out in phases to minimise disruption to airport operations. The initial phase involves the demolition of the existing structure. starting from November 2025, followed by construction of the new terminal. Throughout the process, MIAL will ensure that passenger convenience and safety remains a priority. CSMIA T2, along with Navi Mumbai International Airport, scheduled to be operational in 2025, will manage the capacity gap created by the demolition of T1. Together, the airports will accommodate passengers and flight schedules to meet the growing demands of both Mumbai City and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

The company informed that once completed, the new T1 aims to be the first brownfield, biophilic, and sustainable airport in the country. The project is expected to be completed in 2028-29.

The new terminal is expected to have a complete overhaul of the Passenger Terminal Building. The redevelopment would include infrastructure upgrades such as modern electrical substations, district cooling, and a new baggage handling system.

The Multi-Modal Transit Hub (MMTH) will be at centre of Mumbai’s air, road, and rail networks, the company said. Passengers will be able to enjoy direct metro access and underground bus stations as part of the new experience.
