Budget 2025: UDAN Scheme Upgrade, Greenfield Airports In Bihar, Major Announcements For Aviation Sector
Budget 2025: One of the most notable announcements was the launch of an upgraded version of the UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik) regional connectivity scheme.

Budget 2025: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the Union Budget 2025 in Parliament on Saturday, introducing key initiatives to strengthen India’s aviation sector. The proposals focus on enhancing regional air connectivity, expanding infrastructure, and accommodating the rising demand for domestic air travel.
Revamped UDAN Scheme For Broader Connectivity
One of the most notable announcements was the launch of an upgraded version of the UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik) regional connectivity scheme. Building on the success of the existing program, the new scheme aims to link 120 additional destinations across the country. The Government is targeting the transportation of four crore more passengers over the next ten years under this initiative.
The revamped scheme also plans to support the development of helipads and smaller airports in remote, hilly regions and aspirational districts, particularly in the northeastern states. These steps are expected to address long-standing connectivity challenges and promote economic development in these areas.
Since its inception, UDAN has enabled over 1.5 crore passengers, largely from middle-income groups, to experience faster and more affordable air travel. So far, the scheme has operationalised 619 routes and connected 88 airports, demonstrating its significant role in democratising air travel in India.
New Airports & Infrastructure Expansion In Bihar
Another major development announced in the Budget was the Government’s plan to establish greenfield airports in Bihar. These new airports are expected to cater to the state’s evolving aviation requirements and boost its economic growth.
In addition, the capacity of Patna Airport will be expanded to meet rising passenger demand, while a brownfield project at Bihta is also in the pipeline. These initiatives are expected to transform Bihar’s air travel infrastructure, making it more robust and efficient.
The Budget’s focus on strengthening regional air connectivity and infrastructure aligns with the Government’s broader vision of inclusive growth and enhanced mobility for all citizens. By fostering better connectivity, these measures are likely to spur tourism, trade, and regional development across the country.
